In an unprecedented act against the State of Israel, the United States abstained from voting on UN Security Council Resolution 2334 on December 23. This led to a 14-to-0 approval by the UN of the resolution, which denies the legal validity of Israel’s West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements.

This is the very first time the United States has refused to use its UN veto power to protect the interests of Israel, marking a dramatic change in the relationship between the two nations.

Of course, this is deeply disappointing that the U.S. decided to abstain from the UN vote. But this is only the latest and most appalling example of the anti-Israel sentiment that is evident in the UN. In an international development that one observer could only describe as “surreal,” the United Nations General Assembly has, in its 2016 session, adopted 20 resolutions condemning Israel.

Even more telling is this, from The Jerusalem Post:

In his final briefing to the Security Council last Friday, [outgoing United Nations Secretary General] Ban Ki-moon said, “Over the last decade, I have argued that we cannot have a bias against Israel at the UN. Decades of political maneuvering have created a disproportionate number of resolutions, reports and committees against Israel. In many cases, instead of helping the Palestinian issue, this reality has foiled the ability of the UN to fulfill its role effectively.”

But in one day alone, November 8, the General Assembly adopted ten resolutions singling out Israel. Two of those used verbatim the anti-Semitic language from resolutions passed this fall by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that actually deny Jewish historic and religious ties to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Another resolution called for the immediate return to Syria of the Golan Heights, liberated by Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967. The resolution called it “occupied territory.” So, while Syrian president Bashar Assad makes war against his own citizens, the General Assembly was focused on returning the Heights to this corrupt and murderous maniac.

With each of these ridiculous resolutions, the General Assembly proves its irrelevance, cluelessness, and hypocrisy.

Not surprisingly, the situation attracted an angry reaction from UN Watch, the Geneva-based watchdog organization that seeks to highlight what it calls “the disproportionate attention and unfair treatment applied by the UN toward Israel.”

Commenting in particular on the UN’s action on November 8, UN Watch said, “The UN’s assault on Israel today with a torrent of one-sided resolutions is surreal.” The organization further observed that not a single resolution was directed at “gross human rights abusers such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Venezuela, China, or Cuba.

“Today’s farce at the General Assembly underscores a simple fact: the UN’s automatic majority has no interest in truly helping Palestinians, nor in protecting anyone’s human rights. The goal of these ritual, one-sided condemnations remains the scapegoating of Israel,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

Let’s hope and pray that 2017 is a better year, one that not only reestablishes the UN’s credibility, but also brings fairness back to the international community’s treatment of the Jewish state.
